Hazel Daniel Thompson, 84, went to be with the Lord and her family on August 16, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia. She was born on January 9, 1941, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, to the late Willie Albert Daniel and Annie Mae Price Daniel. Hazel was preceded in death by her brothers, John Albert Daniel (Shirley) and Lynnwood Marvin Daniel (Anna). She is survived by her brother, Luther Ray Daniel (Etta); two daughters, Sylvia Sledge (Steven) and Cheryl Rush (Larry); three sons, Chris Thompson, Kevin Thompson Sr. (Bridgett), and James Thompson Jr.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hazel lived a life defined by faith, compassion, and unconditional love. Those who were blessed to know her, carry on her legacy.
A devout Christian and a shining example of grace, Hazel dedicated her life to her faith and her beloved family. Her journey was one of service—not only to her loved ones but also to the many children she cared for as the retired cafeteria manager at Churchland Primary School. Through her kindness and nurturing spirit, Hazel touched countless young lives, offering a warm smile, encouraging words, and a sense of belonging to all who crossed her path.
Hazel took immense joy in her roles as great-grandmother and matriarch, cherishing every moment spent surrounded by generations of her family. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of shared meals—her compassionate and loving nature providing the foundation for family gatherings and celebrations of life. Those who knew Hazel often described her as having a heart of gold and as a bright light in every room.
Her passions in life were simple yet profound: her church and her family. She modeled a deep, abiding trust in the Lord and encouraged those around her to welcome Jesus into their hearts, sharing her faith both in word and deed.
Hazel’s legacy will forever be felt by those who loved and knew her. As we remember her vibrant spirit, let us take comfort in her favorite words: “Trust in the Lord, welcome Jesus into your heart, and you too shall be saved.” Hazel Daniel Thompson—a woman of many hats—has now risen to be with the Lord, wearing her crown. She will be deeply missed, but remains eternally cherished by all who were graced by her love.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Clarks Funeral Home, 110 East 5th Avenue, Kenbridge, VA, from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm. Graveside services will follow at Westview Cemetery, South Main Street, Farmville, VA, at 1:30 pm.
