September 22, 1948 — June 13, 2026

Catlett, VA

Howard “Duane” Sheffield, 77, of Catlett, Virginia, passed away on June 13, 2026.

Born on September 22, 1948, Duane—known to some as “Bubba”—lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and love for his family. He attended school in Lunenburg County through the twelfth grade and held a variety of jobs in his early years, including surveying, working for Southside Chevrolet, assisting with the construction of Interstate 85, and spending a short time at R. E. Staples Funeral Home in Victoria.

Duane was best known for his career with Caterpillar. He entered the apprenticeship program in 1970, completing it in 1975. He later served as a Field Mechanic in Haymarket before becoming Shop Manager at Hazel, a position he held from 1986 until 2009. Following his time at Hazel, he worked for McClung-Logan as a Fleet Manager before retiring.

In retirement, Duane enjoyed spending time at “the farm” with his family, tending the land alongside his son, Timmy, on their seven-generation Sheffield family farm, and tinkering in his shop. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and found joy in working with his hands, taking great pride in helping his family with whatever they needed. He loved spending time by the pool at home with his family and the dogs, creating memories in the simple moments of everyday life. Motorcycle rides became a special way of bonding during his later years, providing treasured opportunities to spend time together with family on the open road. One of his favorite destinations was Rick’s at Fairview Beach in King George County, a place that brought him great joy and many cherished memories.

He was preceded in death by his father, Burnace Sheffield; his mother, Irene Driggs Sheffield; and his brothers, George B. Sheffield and Michael D. Sheffield.

Duane is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty Sheffield; his daughter, Angie Williams and her husband, Alan; his son, Timmy Sheffield and his wife, Norma; his stepdaughter, Betty “Leigh” Hawkins, and her devoted partner, Jake Owens; and his faithful companion, Tank.

He was a proud grandfather to Ashley Garrett and her husband, Christopher; Brooke Williams; Allison Sheffield; and his step-grandchildren, T.J. Archer and Hailey Archer. His grandchildren brought him tremendous joy, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with them. They will especially remember his love of hunting, the driving lessons he gave on the farm, the many hours he spent playing catch, and his beautiful blue eyes.

He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Spiro Garrett, Declan Garrett, Cora Fay Garrett, and Oaklen Pairet, whom he dearly loved, as well as his step-great-grandchild, Kharsyn Archer, who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Barbara Sheffield and Lynn Sheffield-Kiger; his niece, Kristin Sheffield; his devoted cousin, Janice Lord Seaton; and many extended family members and friends.

Duane will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. The memories he created, the lessons he taught, and the values he instilled will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
