John L. “Buck” Smyth, of Kenbridge, Virginia, passed away on June 12, 2026. He was the son of the late John Russell Smyth and Susan Neblett Smyth. Buck is survived by his son, John Lough Smyth (Mellisia Cumbia); his brothers, Sid Smyth (Lisa) and Sterling Smyth (Tish); a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by loyal family friend and caregiver, Francis White.

Buck devoted much of his working life to the family business, serving as Warehouse Manager and Store Manager for Smyth Food Service and Smyth Cash and Carry in Kenbridge. He was known for his strong work ethic, steady leadership, and deep commitment to serving his community.

In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, refinishing furniture, and playing the drums. He took great pride in craftsmanship and found joy in creating and restoring pieces with his own hands.

A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew in Kenbridge, Buck faithfully served as a member of the Vestry and as a Lay Reader. His faith was central to his life, and he remained actively involved in the church community for many years.

He was a dedicated member of the Kenbridge Lions Club and a proud fourth-generation Mason. He became a Master Mason in July 1985 and was an active member of Victoria Masonic Lodge #304 AF & AM. He studied the craft diligently and was deeply committed to the principles and fellowship of the fraternity.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, 512 South Broad Street, Kenbridge, Virginia. Masonic Last Rites will be administered during the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Victoria Masonic Lodge #304, P.O. Box 159, Victoria, VA 23974.
