Julie “Juju,” “Dudu,” Dunn Lafoon 81, of Alberta, VA, joined her husband of 47 years, Austin Watson “Watt” Lafoon, in heaven on April 2, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Archie Nichols Dunn and Esther Carver Dunn of Roxboro, NC.
She is survived by her two children, Kimberly Lafoon Barbour and Austin Dunn Lafoon (Jessica); her two grandchildren, Chancellor Austin Barbour and Austin Walker Lafoon; extended family, countless friends, and the many “extra” children who were lucky enough to be loved, looked after, and occasionally kept in line as if they were her own.
Julie grew up in Roxboro, NC, graduating from Roxboro High School, then Kings Business School in Raleigh, NC, and The Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Danville, VA. She enjoyed a long and meaningful career of 41 years in nursing between Central State Hospital, VCBR, and the Department of Corrections as a Medical Administrator. Her and “Watt” also found time to co-own Brandywine Acres florist and Landscaping somewhere in that timeframe.
Julie was known for her selflessness by everyone who knew her. She would give anything she had to make someone else happy—no matter who they were—and only ever asked for a simple “thank you” in return. She especially loved cooking, but nothing meant more to her than her Sunday dinners, where the table was always full and the door was always open. It wasn’t uncommon for the whole neighborhood to gather, eat, and spend time together—just the way she liked it.
Julie truly enjoyed every aspect of life—and no grass ever grew under her feet. She was the life of the party, always on the go, and always surrounded by people. Over the years, she made memories on countless boat rides aboard the Red Baron, camping trips to North Bend, beach trips, and adventures to Las Vegas. She spent many years volunteering at Kenston Forest, where she was a familiar face at athletic events—running concessions, taking tickets, and quietly keeping things on track (whether anyone realized it or not). She could also often be found at Mitchell’s, Kahill’s, or for a special treat, Red Lobster—usually surrounded by people she loved.
Julie didn’t just play the role of matriarch—she was the matriarch. Around here, that also meant being the team mom, the class mom, and someone everyone just naturally gravitated toward. As far as Julie was concerned, every meal was the best meal she’d ever had—and she had a way of making you believe it too.
None of it would have meant anything without her greatest love - her family. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and daughter-in-law always held a special place in her heart, but the ones who made her “JuJu” and “Dudu” knew they had her wrapped around their fingers.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 8, 2026 from 5 to 7pm at Julie’s home, 433 Lew Jones Road, Alberta, Va. 23821. A celebration of her life will be held at 4pm Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the New Hope Christian Church, 742 New Hope Road, Alberta, Va. Following services the family will again receive friends for fellowship at Julie’s Home.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made specifically to the Kenston Forest “Athletics” Department, 75 Ridge Road, Blackstone, Va. 23824.
