Oscar Miller Buchanan, Jr., age 80, passed away at his home on August 5, 2025. He was born November 24, 1944, in Saltville, Virginia, to the late Oscar Miller Buchanan, Sr., and Helen Elizabeth Wilkinson Buchanan of Kenbridge, Virginia.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Mary Jane Blackburn Buchanan, of Danville, Virginia; his children: Joseph Turner Buchanan and his wife, Susan Eisenhuth Buchanan, of Youngsville, NC; Helen Jane Hodges and her husband, Edward Falcon Hodges, Jr., of Danville, VA, and their son, Miller Falcon Hodges of Raleigh, NC; Robert Miller Buchanan, his partner Tina Stone, and his children Kennedy Holmes Buchanan and Lucille Mei Buchanan, all of Midlothian, VA; a bonus daughter, Kristin Elizabeth Callis Hodges, her husband Emory Melvin Hodges, of Kenbridge, VA, and their children, Mary Elizabeth (Mary Lizzie) Hodges of Charleston, SC, and Samuel Emory Hodges, of Kenbridge, VA; and his former daughter-in-law, mother of Kennedy and Lucy, Hayley Michelle Trinidad, of Henrico, VA.
Others left to cherish his memory include his sister, Martha Turner (Martee) Buchanan, of Radford, VA; sister-in-law Sallie Ann Mahaney Buchanan, of Kenbridge, VA; brother-in-law Joseph William (Jody) Blackburn, Jr., and his wife, Karen Ann Roberts Blackburn, of Youngsville, NC; sister-in-law Laura Still of Victoria, VA; brother-in-law David Kennedy (Ken) Blackburn and his wife, Beverly Cumbea Blackburn, of Kenbridge, VA; sister-in-law Leslie Marie Osborne and her husband, Randall (Randy) Thomas Osborne, of Independence, VA; many, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William George Buchanan; brother-in-law Robert Wilkinson Blackburn; sister-in-law Elizabeth Penn Blackburn Callis and her husband, William Jerry Callis.
Miller grew up in Kenbridge, graduated from Kenbridge High School in 1963, and earned his bachelor of science degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech. He joined Philip Morris in 1969, initially working overseas in Turkey and Greece until 1980, and subsequently in Richmond, VA, until his retirement in 1997. He had a vivacious thirst for life, wine, family, friends, summer tomatoes, and researching stocks. He loved traveling and trying new things, living throughout Europe and road tripping throughout the United States and Canada. When in Virginia, he enjoyed learning local history and trying new restaurants with his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held 11:00am Saturday, August 16, 2025, at West Main Baptist Church in Danville, VA. A reception will immediately follow at Cotton at Riverside Mill.
