Richard Sydney "Candy Apple" Hawthorne, 67, of South Hill, Virginia passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025 with his family by his side. He was the father of the late Richard S. “Buddy” Hawthorne, Jr; he was the son of the late Edward S. Hawthorne and Mae Barnes Hawthorne; and was brother of the late Charles H. Hawthorne and Wiliam E. “Eddie” Hawthorne; he was also uncle of the late Chris Wilson.
Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Jackson Hawthorne; their daughter, Sandy Hawthorne (William Simon) their grandchildren, Tyler Cothran (Jessica), Karlee Cothran (David), Hunter Cothran (Breanna) and Noah Simon; their great-grandchildren, Dustin Cothran, Preston Cothran and Oaklynn Cothran; his sister Ginna H. Wilson (Bill Huskey) and extended family and friends.
Richard grew up in Lunenburg County and graduated from Central High School in 1976. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for RBS in Boydton and a retired farmer. He was a member of the Oakland Christian Church and the Bagleys Mill Hunt Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, racing at South Boston Speedway, and watching Nascar racing on TV. He was a huge Davey Allison fan. He loved peanut butter cookies and Zero Sugar DR. Pepper.
He will always be remembered for the love he had for his family and his friends.
